The simple ability to repair minor injuries on the move is a huge advantage we have as humans over the rest of the animal world. In some situations, the smallest cut or blister can become an infection that ends your trip, or your life. I always carry a small first aid kit in my jacket, and a larger one in my vehicle or pack. If you have kids or a spouse, it's your duty to have the equipment to take care of them close at hand. Even catastrophic injuries can be treated long enough to raise better medical care, or simply stop the bleeding so natural healing can start. This is a simple skill that many overlook, and it can be learned quickly. The mantra was screamed into my head as a young Marine: Stop the Bleeding. Start the Breathing. Protect the Wound. Treat for Shock.

If it's simple enough for 18-year-old Devil Dogs it should be standard for everyone.
